The clinic can also refer patients for bariatric surgery if indicated.

Background – Available Therapies and Unmet Medical Need

Dieting and exercise are the first steps to try lose weight. However they often don’t work. Even when dieting and exercise do result in weight loss most people have difficulty keeping the weight off because of the body’s natural response to losing weight. The body vigorously tries to defend it’s weight by increasing appetite and slowing down metabolism when weight is lost. This usually results in the weight being put back on and often results in “diet cycling” in which people repeatedly lose weight only to put on even more weight due to the body’s response.

Bariatric surgery offers an effective treatment for some people but it comes with significant risks. Weight loss medication is an alternative option that is relatively safe and effective.

Over the past number of years there has been enormous progress in the field of weight loss medication. However this has not fed into medicine more widely despite the strong evidence from clinical trials. The Medication Weight Loss Clinic was set up specifically to bridge the gap between the available treatments and the unmet needs of people wanting to lose weight.
